Hendricks writes both for the theologian and the novice Bible reader. He's clear, simple, and profoundly helpful in understanding how to appropriately read the Bible in the context of its original audience and meaning. This book was required reading for my seminary courses and, thus, I assumed it would be lofty in its presentation. However, Hendricks has a knack for making what would otherwise be complex ideas quite simple and accessible to every reader, regardless of age, background, or educati..more
To read the bible more intelligently.
It was beneficial, but it became very tedious for someone with some training to find those very beneficial parts amidst the mainly basic teachings. Highly recommend it for a minister teaching a church group, and with more determination, there is things that will help skilled Bible readers to grow in their process.
This is a must have on your shelf if you have a desire to understand the Bible with clarity. I have read through this book over and over again, but I always glean some valuable golden nuggets everytime I read it.

Not an easy read. It takes more of a teaching approach, and is very thorough. Highly recommend if you want to learn how to 'study' the Bible.

Must read for any believer. Strong book on how to do Bible study. Read it 20+ years ago and enjoyed it both times.
Great book for learning the basics of how to study the bible in such a way that it will bring about life change. Looks in depth at how to observe, interpret, and apply the Word of God.
Best book on Bible Study I have ever used.
Easy, practical method on how to study the Bible.
Very clear and well written.
This book is an excellent primer on bible study. It outlines clearly how to do private bible studies using the methods of observation, interpretation, and application. Prof. Hendricks did a good job of teaching the readers how to look at a certain passage while encouraging the readers that the bible isn't a vague and mysterious book that cannot be understood. My favorite parts are the exercises that can be found at the end of every chapter so that the bible student can apply immediately the prin..more

Excellent text. I must say that though I was raised in the Methodist Church and my Dad was in Christian Education and taught me well and wisely, I learned a great deal about sections of the Bible and about Biblical facts that I was completely unaware of!
This is a MUST for anyone within the ministry and it is also of huge benefit to “Laymen” wanting to learn more about the continuity of the Books in the Bible, what types of literature are grouped within the Bible, and how to truly study the text..more

This is a very helpful and important book. This book helped me have a much better understanding of how to dive into Scripture. As Christians, we’re always told to be people of the book and to read the Bible, but oftentimes there’s not a lot of guidance on how to do that. This book is a wonderful guide for the person in that situation.

Good and fairly exhaustive book on how to study the Bible. Seems to me like it could have been shorter, and the method is so involved that I can't see putting all of it into practice. However, the parts on why to study the Bible, how to apply what you learn, and planning to make changes based on conviction arising from your study are gold. Very worth reading.

This is a phenomenal resource for first-time, intermediate, or advanced Bible readers. Hendricks takes a three-step approach to uncovering the meaning of the biblical text and living it every day. I highly recommend this resource as a beginning to anyone who wishes to read the Bible with accuracy and faithfulness.

This is a fantastic resource for teaching how to read God's Word and apply it. I'm a firm believer that the very commentary on the Bible is the Bible itself; you just have to know how to read and discern. Living By the Book truly helps its readers do just that.

Did not actually finish this one. Halfway through I decided it was better as a reference book than one to read straight through. Very practical and helpful, very extensive.

very detailed book on studying the bible, great info.
The best guide (and goad) to help people learn to study the Bible. Excellent writing style, comprehensive, exhortative and packed with solid study techniques.

SO helpful if you want something easily accessible to help you read God's word in the ways it was meant to be read-- can be a little systematic though.

If there is ever someone who complains that they hate inductive study, or can't get into it/can't get anything out of it --- there is another way to study outlined in this book that gets to the same result.

Living by the Book teaches one how to study the Bible on one’s own. It focuses on three key steps: observation, interpretation, and application. For each step there are chapters that break the steps down into manageable ideas. Each chapter also offers suggestions for practice.

I took a class at Moody Bible Institute in 2001 called 'Elements of Bible Study'. It was an 'intro to hermeneutics class' and they used this as a Textbook for the class. I did enjoy the class and this book was easy to go through.

Hendricks adds his charm and teaching style into providing a well rounded approach to not just studying The Bible, but could also apply to studying anything. However, the book has specific application to The Bible. Broken into three sections, Hendricks focuses your attention on what to read, how to read, and how to apply what you read. This is a good book for any young Christian or young person who is starting to take their Bible reading to a deeper level. If you are well established in the fait..more
This is by far the best ' How to study the Bible ' book I have ever read and there have been many. This is a down to earth, practical, and insightful book that encourages you to get into the Word of God and have it impact your life and grow as a Christian. No color markings are overly syrupy approach. Although you are encouraged to mark your Bible to reinforce what you are reading. Key points- Pray, Read, Meditate! Duh! Contribution: The Hendricks’ book is one of the most comprehensive books on Bible study I have read and surveyed. By addressing each step in the inductive method process, there is no doubt as to what each step entails and requires for orthodox interpretation. In addition, the examples and exercises in the chapters give the reader a chance to both see and do the step explained. In addition to the inductive method, the Hendricks’ even address the nature of reading and how the Bible can be understo..more
